THE DEMOCRATIC CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF CALVERT COUNTY WILL CONVENE A SPECIAL PUBLIC HEARING TO INTERVIEW CANDIDATES FOR THE DISTRICT 27 MARYLAND STATE SENATE VACANCY ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 9th AT 7pm

The Democratic Central Committee of Calvert County will convene a special public hearing on Saturday, January 9th at 7:00 p.m. to interview candidates for the District 27 Maryland State Senate Vacancy that was created by the resignation of Senator Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. on Wednesday December 23, 2020.

Pursuant to the Democratic Central Committee of Calvert County Bylaws Article II Responsibility Section 2.3.1 The Central Committee shall present names of candidates as required by law to the Governor for appointment.

The Governor shall appoint a person to fill such vacancy from a person whose name shall be submitted to him/her in writing within thirty (30) days after the occurrence of the vacancy from the legislative district from which the Senator or Delegate was elected or appointed, provided that the appointee shall be a member of the Democratic Party in the legislative district at the time of the last election or appointment of the vacating Senator or Delegate.  It shall be the duty of the Governor to make said appointment within fifteen (15) days after the submission thereof to him/her.  If the vacancy occurs in a district which has boundaries comprising a portion or all of two or more counties, the Central Committee of each county involved shall have one vote for submitting the name of a resident of the district.  If there is a tie vote between or among the Central Committees, the list of proposed names shall be submitted to the Governor, and he/she shall make the appointment from the list.


Eligibility Requirements and Instructions for Candidate Filing:

  • Must be a registered voter in Calvert, Charles or Prince George’s County.

  • Must reside in the 27th Legislative District

FILING DEADLINE:  Thursday January 7, 2021 11:59 p.m.

  • Incomplete packets and packets received after the deadline will not be accepted

  • Candidates will speak in alphabetical order, 2 minutes per candidate

  • Candidates may have no more than 2 people speak on their behalf - 2 minutes each

  • Speakers may not transfer their time to another speaker.

The special hearing shall be livestreamed on Facebook.  Candidates and people speaking on their behalf shall be emailed a zoom registration link.
